If your loved furry family member has a wound, sting or bite, bath the sore area in salty water or an iodine based skin antiseptic such as betadine. An ice pack may be applied, to reduce pain and swelling. Prevent further licking by applying a home made plastic cone on the head using a bucket or yoghurt carton with a hole cut in the base to pull the pet’s head through and cut slots to weave the collar through to fasten. NEVER use Dettol on pets because they lick it off and may develop bizarre neurological problems, such as a clicking jaw. NEVER give pets Panadol or Aspirin as their bodies cannot break it down. If your pet has a medical condition such as epilepsy, allergies or a heart condition, ask your veterinarian to prescribe some emergency medicines for you to have at home. Keep pets safely shut in after an injury. This is important as some pets run away and hide when ill (preventing treatment) but is a natural response as they do not wish to be seen while weak. Veterinary Emergency Centres often give first aid assistance over the phone and may even instruct you to dose with a suitable medicine.
